St Leon's Circus
Movements through Australia in 1882-5
The St Leon family was active in Australian circus over 5 generations from 1847 until the 1960s. The original family
member had been a 'tumbler' and had learnt equestrian skills in Astley's Amphitheatre in London. The family reorganised its own circus
near Kilmore, Victoria in 1875 and it quickly grew into Australia's largest circus. It was the first Australian circus to acquire
a menagerie of wild animals. The original family member, professionally known as Matthew St Leon died in Melbourne in 1903. 
By then his chiuldren and grandchildren were performers in the great circuses of the USA, such as Ringling Bros and Forepaugh-Sells.
