| The Wirth Bros were the sons of a German musician, Johannes Wirth, who arrived in Australia with his brothers about 1855. | ||||||
| The original Wirth brothers travelled around Australia as a 'German band', playing music on the goldfields, at country | ||||||
| race weeks and agricultural shows. The children of Johannes comenced their travels | ||||||
| in 1875 as The Star Variety Troupe, By the early 1880s, this had grown into Wirth Bros Circus. After the demise of | ||||||
| FitzGerald Bros Circus in 1906, Wirth Bros was left the only large circus in Australia and maintained a position of | ||||||
| preeminence until its demise in 1963. Wirth Bros Circus toured Australasia by rail and ship according to standardised routes, and | ||||||
| regularly imported top circus acts from America and Europe. Apart from an | ||||||
| extraordinary world tour, 1893-1900, Wirth Bros confined its operations to Australia and New Zealand. | ||||||
